St. Columba CYO Basketball

Coaches Information

Coach's Applications are now being accepted

  • Coaches and Assistant Coaches must complete an application now. This is required annually.

  • Experience and seniority will be considered when choosing coaches but we always need new volunteers.

  • New York Archdioceses regulations mandate two (2) coaches be appointed to each team. Formation of teams is contingent on this requirement being fulfilled. Coaches will not be assigned to more than one team unless necessary.

  • The Archdiocese of New York requires all volunteers who work with youths, including CYO coaches and assistant coaches to complete a background check. You can learn more about this at the Archdiocese of New York - Screening Procedures website. St Columba's policy is that no one is allowed to coach until their background check is submitted. For your convenience, a link to the current (9/2016) background check form is here . Please do not send the form to the Safe Environment Office. Send the background check authorization form to the St Columba Rectory and notify the basketball registrar as well. If you want to fax the form to the rectory, their fax number is 845-227-8390. Alternatively, bring your form to the travel or instructional coach's meeting and they will be turned in to the St Columba rectory for processing. The Church of St. Columba institution number is 392.

  • Note to returning coaches.  If you have submitted a background check authorization form to the archdiocese within the last 6 years AND you have been a coach for us annually since submitting that background check, you do not have to send another background check authorization! All new coaches must submit the background check authorization form.  (Clarified on 9/2/2014)
  • All coaches and assistant coaches who have not already done so, must attend a VIRTUS "Protecting God's Children" class or a "Safer Spaces" class. If you have already attended one of these classes, please provide the date and location of the class on the coach application form in order for the St Columba parish staff to be able to confirm this with the archdiocese. If you can't remember all the details, provide as much information as you can. If you have not previously attended one of these classes you can go to  Archdiocese of New York - Training  and click on the VIRTUS "Protecting God's Children" class link to find upcoming classes in our area. *** New *** You can satisfy your "Safer Spaces" class requirement with an online course now. Go to Archdiocese of New York - Online Training for Volunteers. Note that you must submit a form for a background check to the St Columba rectory before you sign up for the online course.  Please notify the registrar if/when you do this as well.
  • Participation in all travel tournaments requires approval by both the team coach and the athletic director / advisory committee. Coaches can request to go to new tournaments, provided they are cost-effective and no more than (3) per team. Team financing of extra tournaments is not allowed, and all participation must be approved by the program.  Tournaments are for travel teams in the "A" division only.
  • Coaches are strongly encouraged to attend the end of season celebration with their team.
  • Coaches must also attend a meeting to complete rosters and pick up equipment. We will do our best to keep this meeting short:

  • 2021-2022 Travel Coaches mandatory kick-off is TBD

  • In House Coaches kick-off meeting is TBD

Please e-mail us at to let us know you will be attending.
